Gingee fort is one of the best places to visit in Pondicherry. The Fort is declared as a National Monument in 1921. Apart from being a unique architectural feat it is one of the few forts in the State.

It is a beautiful place located about 40 kilometers from Chidambaram. This used to be one of the largest ports of antiquity. Poompuhar is also known as the place where two famous works of ancient Tamil literature, namely Silapathikaram and Manimekalai were composed.
